Boxing helping ex-offenders reintegrate into society

Ex-offender Jared Wagenknecht has found new hope and a renewed sense of purpose, thanks to a unique wellness program that combines mental health support with boxing.

For years, Jared struggled with substance abuse, homelessness, and multiple prison sentences between 2023 and 2024. His lack of consistent engagement with support services left him feeling hopeless and without a positive future outlook. But in October 2024, everything changed.

Upon his final release from prison, Jared was encouraged by IntoJobs Mobile Employment Consultant (MEC) Penny Haynes to join Populi’s GLOVES Program. This six-week initiative, which operates in Mount Gambier, combines an hour of boxing with an hour of group counselling.

The GLOVES Program not only helped Jared stay physically active but also provided a platform to address his mental health issues. “The combination of physical activity and mental health support was exactly what I needed. It gave me a sense of purpose and a reason to keep going,” Jared said.

After completing the program, Jared saw the value in one-on-one counselling and began to regularly engage with Penny, even attending appointments when they weren’t mandatory. This consistent interaction built trust, and Jared started to open up about his barriers. With IntoJobs’ support, he set clear goals and showed a renewed sense of self-confidence and motivation.

“These sessions gave me the tools I needed to manage my mental health and substance abuse. I made a conscious decision to stop using substances, which was a crucial step in regaining my driver’s license and improving my employability.”

Motivated and focused, Jared started applying for jobs. His dedication and positive attitude did not go unnoticed. MEC Penny forwarded his resume to a local employer, and Jared successfully secured a position as a shed cleaner.

Penny said Jared’s transformation is truly inspiring, “He has shown incredible resilience and determination, and I am confident that he will continue to thrive and achieve his goals,” he said.

Looking ahead, Jared is determined to continue his journey of recovery and personal growth. He plans to further his education and skills, with the ultimate goal of securing a more stable and fulfilling career. “I want to prove to myself and others that I can turn my life around. I am committed to staying on this path and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way,” he said.
