Thomas, a long-term unemployed Gladstone man, has triumphed over adversity and is now back in the workforce, thanks to the unwavering support of IntoJobs, and the dedication of local organisations.
For years, Thomas struggled with unemployment, a period that took a heavy toll on his mental health. Anxiety and depression became his constant companions, and the lack of a high school diploma and current skills made the job market seem insurmountable.
But Thomas refused to let his circumstances define him. Determined to regain his confidence and motivation, he took the first step by reaching out for help.
That’s when he was referred to IntoJobs Gladstone, part of the IntoWork Group, where Mobile Employment Consultant Simone Kirk saw the potential in Thomas. Recognising the depth of his challenges, Simone decided to take a comprehensive approach to support him.
“Thomas was in a dark place, but he had a spark of determination that I knew we could fan into a flame,” Simone said.
Thomas was enrolled in the Work for the Dole Project with the Wallaby Rugby League Club in Gladstone. This initiative provided him with structured activities and a sense of purpose. Each day, he found himself surrounded by a supportive community, which helped alleviate his feelings of isolation and anxiety.
Understanding the importance of enhancing Thomas’s skill set, Simone enrolled him in a First Aid and CPR course. These skills not only increased his employability but also gave him a sense of accomplishment and confidence.
Simone then referred Thomas to a local employer, Allied Pickford’s, which had an available position for a removalist offsider. This referral was a strategic move to align Thomas’s new skills with a practical job opportunity. She believed that the physical and team-oriented nature of the job would be a good fit for him.
The structured activities and skill development courses significantly boosted Thomas’s motivation and confidence. He began to see himself in a new light, feeling more prepared and capable of re-entering the workforce.
“The Work for the Dole Project and the First Aid & CPR course gave me a clear path and realistic goals. I no longer felt overwhelmed by the idea of finding a job; I felt ready to take the next steps,” Thomas said.
Thomas’s hard work and the support he received paid off. He successfully secured a casual position with Allied Pickford’s, marking a significant milestone in his journey back to employment. The project supervisor provided an outstanding review, praising Thomas’s dedication and the positive impact of the programme on his life.
“Thomas has shown incredible dedication and resilience. His transformation is a proof to the power of community support and personal determination,” Simone said.
Thomas is now looking forward to the future with renewed optimism. He plans to continue building his skills and exploring new opportunities within the removalist industry. His experience has shown him that with the right support and a willingness to learn, he can overcome any obstacle.
