Joanne’s Journey: Turning a New Leaf on the Road to Employment

At 49, Joanne took a bold step to upend her life in the Northern Territory and start afresh in Queensland.

After experiencing homelessness and facing challenges in finding work, she decided to move in with her daughter to rebuild her life. With the help of IntoJobs*, Joanne has managed to rebuild her confidence, secure stable employment and start regaining control over her life.

“After my dad passed away in 2021, I was depressed. I was struggling with homelessness, I realised I had to get out there and do something. It was really challenging but I knew I had to keep moving forward,” Joanne said.

This tough period deeply affected her confidence, leaving her uncertain about the future.

Joanne sought the help of IntoJobs in Fitzroy to get back on her feet. Her Mobile Employment Consultant (MEC), Lydia, through regular appointments, worked with Joanne to boost her self-esteem and to trust her own abilities.

Lydia also guided Joanne through job search techniques and actively introduced her to employers. This strategy effectively highlighted her existing skills in hospitality, helping her find suitable positions.

“Lydia has been amazing, always offering extra support. She helped me get the job and provided shoes, clothes and other essentials I needed, which made a huge difference,” Joanne said.

With Lydia’s support, Joanne secured a job at Roscoe’s Pizza, where she works consistent hours as an all-rounder. She finds the variety of tasks in her role engaging and credits her job with giving her a sense of purpose and stability. ” I’m comfortable where I am now and it could lead to bigger opportunities. I’m going to stick with it. Right now, I’m focusing on saving a little and finding my own place. It’s a new chapter for me. ”

Joanne has expressed how this opportunity has greatly improved her lifestyle and opened a path toward a more stable future. “Life is tough for everyone, not just me. I’m truly grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received.”

MEC Lydia highlighted just how strong and determined Joanne has been, showing how the right mindset and support can truly help someone turn a new leaf.

“Watching Joanne’s transformation from a participant who was homeless and beaten down by life to a confident, employed individual has been truly inspiring. The support she received and her new job have brought out new ambition and it has been a privilege to be part of her journey,” Lydia said.

Joane continues to receive support from IntoJobs through mobile servicing, which allows her to benefit from regular appointments that complement her work schedule.
