IntoJobs has partnered with Meals on Wheels Mt Gambier to enhance the lives of local jobseekers while positively shaping the community’s view of the Work for the Dole (WFD) program.
WFD is a government-funded initiative designed to provide job seekers with practical work experience, helping them develop skills and build confidence to transition into paid employment. Participants contribute to Meals on Wheels’ mission of delivering nutritious meals to individuals requiring support to live independently. Since the program began in December 2022, seven IntoJobs participants have been referred to Meals on Wheels Mt Gambier. Several have secured full-time jobs, and some have continued as active volunteers for a time—a very successful outcome for everyone involved.
Meals on Wheels CEO, Sharyn Broer, noted that the initiative has helped change community perceptions about the WFD program.
“Many people didn’t realise Meals on Wheels was an option for Centrelink requirements. This increased awareness has led to greater community support and engagement,” she said.
The program has been embraced by the local community, offering participants enhanced employability, networking opportunities, community contribution and skills development.
One volunteer, Thomas Mackie, initially joined the WFD program to meet his Centrelink obligations but quickly developed a strong connection with the team. His confidence grew, leading to Thomas gaining hands-on skills that broadened his job prospects. He has since applied for multiple roles and secured employment.
Due to his work commitments, Thomas is no longer able to volunteer regularly with Meals on Wheels, but the program had a significant impact on him, “I really enjoyed giving back to the community and learning new skills,” he said.
Instead, he plays an important role on the community Christmas lunch Committee, organising parts of the event and securing donations from local businesses, as well as providing a helping hand on the day. “Right now, I just help out yearly on the Christmas committee. I can’t volunteer regularly, but when I have the chance to go back or the time in the future, I would in a heartbeat,” he said.
IntoJobs Work for the Dole Coordinator, Fiona Patterson, highlights the proactive and supportive nature of Meals on Wheels. “They take the time to understand the barriers our participants face, and the staff and volunteers provide a safe, supportive working environment,” she notes.
Sharyn also praised Fiona’s efforts in ensuring participants with a passion for cooking were referred, making for a successful fit between the program and the organisation.
The dedication and enthusiasm of WFD participants has been vital in maintaining Meals on Wheels’ essential services.
“Many of our customers rely on volunteers not just for meals, but for the social connections they bring,” Sharyn explained. “Without them, we’d be understaffed at least one day a week.”
Looking ahead, the team at Meals on Wheels Mt Gambier has ambitious plans to expand the WFD program, aiming to host more volunteers and collaborate with other job providers in town. The positive outcomes and the sense of community fostered through this partnership are truly invaluable.
