When Joseph Alejandro migrated from the Philippines in 2013, he carried hopes for a better future but also faced significant barriers that made settling into Australian life challenging. The language barrier affected Joseph’s self-confidence, while the absence of a driver’s licence and applicable qualifications made finding employment particularly difficult. Without reliable transport, even applying for jobs felt out of reach.

With support from our IntoJobs team in Murray Bridge (SA)* Joseph began taking meaningful steps toward overcoming these challenges. His Mobile Employment Consultant, Jessie-Dee, knew that a driver’s licence would be a critical foundation for independence and employability. She referred him to specialist driver training and before too long, Joseph successfully completed his Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) and obtained his Australian driver’s licence.

This milestone proved to be a significant step forward. Having a licence not only increased Joseph’s confidence but also opened doors to roles that required reliable, independent transportation. For the first time in years, Joseph felt ready to pursue work opportunities without feeling like he was being held back.

After so many months out of the workforce, Joseph had some work to do to build self-belief and feel work-ready. Jessie-Dee referred him to the Resilience Reset program, designed to help participants address personal barriers and prepare for re-entry into employment.

As Joseph became more proactive in his job search, he realised more opportunities would become available if he gained his forklift licence. With support from Jessie-Dee, he successfully completed the course and gained his forklift ticket.

With his driver’s licence, renewed confidence, and forklift accreditation, Joseph was off and running. He secured a job interview with Australian Saltworks in Murray Bridge and was offered a position, commencing work the following week.

Joseph has since expressed deep gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey. Consistent encouragement and the will to succeed helped him stay motivated and focused.

“Joseph never gave up, even when the process felt overwhelming,” shared Jessie-Dee. “He always kept his chin up and showed a real willingness to work on himself. Watching his progress from where he was to finding full-time work has been incredibly rewarding.”
