For Jimiramira Wilson, the dream of a stable and fulfilling career was once just that – a dream.
Years of hopping between casual jobs in hospitality and retail had left him feeling stuck, with no clear path forward. But everything changed when he realised that his hometown in North Queensland, with its thriving tourism industry and stunning Great Barrier Reef, held the key to a new and exciting career in marine operations.
The challenge was getting into the marine industry which required training and qualifications that were financially out of reach. But Jimiramira was determined. With the help of IntoJobs Mackay (part of the IntoWork Group) stepping in to cover the costs, he was able to enrol in the Coxswain Grade 3 Skill Set, MAR20324 Certificate II in Maritime Operations, and Safety Marine Skills Set with LROCP.
As Jimiramira worked hard to complete his training, he wasn’t alone. Mobile Employment Consultant Natasha Simpson was there every step of the way, offering post-placement support that helped him land a casual gig as a kitchen hand on a tourist island. And when the time came to put his new skills to the test, Jimiramira was ready. He successfully completed all the requirements for his AMSA Coxswain Ticket and set his sights on a new role.
The wait was worth it. Palm Bay Resort on Long Island, where Jimiramira was already working, offered him a new contract to join their team on the tourist ferry and barge. It was a moment of joy, and Jimiramira was overwhelmed with gratitude for the support he’d received along the way.
“I never thought I’d get the chance to gain my marine ticket,” Jimiramira said. “I’m so thankful to Natasha and IntoJobs for believing in me.”
As Jimiramira embarks on this new chapter in his career, Mobile Employment Consultant Natasha said she is super proud of how far Jimiramira has come, “Jimiramira’s journey is a great example of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. I’m thrilled to have played a part in his success, and I have no doubt he’ll excel in his new role,” she said.
