From homelessness to hope – Travis’s journey to employment

When Travis Piscioneri first connected with IntoJobs  in 2024, he was experiencing homelessness and facing a number of practical challenges, including limited access to essential identification such as a bank card, Medicare card, birth certificate, and driver’s license. Without photo ID, everyday connections like owning a mobile phone were out of reach, adding to his isolation. Alongside these challenges, Travis was managing his mental health, which sometimes made it difficult for him to engage consistently with appointments.

Despite these barriers, our team was determined to help Travis turn his life around. In Queensland, this support is provided by IntoJobs delivery partner MRAEL, and our approach began by supporting Travis to apply for a bank card and Medicare Card, ensuring he had access to essential financial and healthcare services. With temporary accommodation secured, Travis started to feel a sense of stability, which allowed him to engage more regularly with his appointments.

As his confidence grew, Travis’s Mobile Employment Consultant helped him obtain his 18 Plus Card and eventually renew his driver’s licence. These achievements opened new opportunities, and Travis was referred to Australian Trade Training College for internal training in “Intro to Working at Heights.”

He successfully completed the course, earning units in RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights, RIIHAN301E Operate Elevating Work Platform, and TLID0020 Shift Materials Safely Using Manual Handling Methods.

With training complete, we helped Travis to update his resume and referred him to a local employer, Flooring Xtra Gladstone, for a warehouse position. Travis’s hard work and determination paid off, and he was offered a casual role.

With this big first step taken, Travis was able to secure stable housing and enjoy his new independence. But his journey didn’t stop there.

When his shifts at Flooring Xtra fluctuated due to circumstances out of his control, Travis reached out to a friend who drives taxis and expressed interest in the industry. His new Mobile Employment Consultant, Kordeliah Moutira, encouraged him to contact the employer directly.

The employer was eager to chat further, and that same day we secured him a job offer – provided he had the relevant licences,” Kordeliah said.

IntoJobs funded Travis’ driver medical and driver authority, giving him the foot in the door and a second stream of income providing flexibility and stability for when his shifts fluctuated in his casual warehousing role. Within a week, everything was booked, and Travis began driver training.

Travis now has two sources of income, and Kordeliah couldn’t be prouder. “Travis is very happy to have a second job and is already thinking about upskilling again. He knows that IntoJobs is here to support him no matter what.”

Reflecting on his progress, Travis said:

“I can see I’ve come a long way. It’s been tough, but with the right support, I’ve managed to turn things around.”

Travis’ ongoing success has been achieved through targeted support from IntoJobs that addressed immediate barriers and adapted as his circumstances changed. Support included securing identification, accessing training, funding required licences, and facilitating employer connections. This approach enabled Travis to secure ongoing employment, maintain income stability, and progress toward further skills development.
