Paving the Way: Building Skills, Confidence and Community Impact

A group of future trade stars are making an enduring and meaningful contribution to the Murray Bridge (SA) community through the “Paving the Way” Work for the Dole project, currently underway at a local church.

The project has brought participants together to excavate and prepare a new pathway designed to improve accessibility and safe access for all who visit the church grounds. Once completed, the pathway will provide a safer route for church patrons and visitors of all ages and abilities, reinforcing the church’s role as a welcoming space within the community.

Delivered in partnership with Workforce Australia, “Paving the Way” offers a way for jobseekers to maintain engagement with the workforce while building skills employers need, such as teamwork, communication and work ethic.

Regional Leader Kristy Johinke says each one of the participants has shown real commitment to the task. “It’s been great to see the sense of achievement as the pathway is starting to take shape,” she said. “They all seem to take some pride in the fact that their work will leave a positive legacy for the church and the wider community.”

Beyond the physical improvements to the site, “Paving the Way” is delivering significant personal and professional benefits for everyone involved. Participants are gaining valuable hands-on experience in practical construction and landscaping, including site preparation, the safe use of tools, workplace safety practices and the importance of teamwork. These real-world skills are helping to improve employability and create a pathway towards sustainable job opportunities.

For many participants, the project has created structure, routine and a renewed sense of purpose, while boosting confidence and self-belief through tangible achievements. Working together towards a shared goal creates a strong sense of camaraderie, with participants able to see the practical results of their hard work taking shape every day.

Importantly, the project has highlighted the value of community-led initiatives. By working on a site that serves the wider public, participants are contributing directly to the wellbeing of others, reinforcing the message that everyone has something valuable to offer.

“I’m really excited to see the positive impact this project is having on the personal growth of the participants. I’m sure they can see how their hard work is helping move them closer to long-term employment opportunities,” Kristy said.
